About Us
Veronica Dorato received her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of New Mexico in 1990, and has been a registered nurse since that time. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Dorato practiced nursing primarily in the area of maternal/ child health.
Ms. Dorato graduated cum laude from the University of New Mexico School of Law. During law school, Ms. Dorato was active in the Student Health Law Association and the National Italian American Bar Association. Ms. Dorato graduated with additional honors including Clinical Honors, the Deans Award for Contributing to the Law School, and the Judge Seth Oliver Ethics Award.
Following law school, Ms. Dorato served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Michael Bustamante of the New Mexico Court of Appeals. Ms. Dorato also worked in a prominent insurance defense firm practicing in the defense against personal injury, worker’s compensation, medical malpractice and general litigation. In the Fall 2008, she served as a visiting professor of Clinical Law at the University of New Mexico School of Law.
Veronica Dorato now represents individuals in their claims against insurance companies in the areas of worker’s compensation and personal injury.
Derek Weems is a Farmington, NM native. He received his Bachelor’s of Arts in Political Science from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Weems managed a group of small businesses in San Antonio, worked in gaming and tourism, and was an acclaimed motivational speaker for Making it Count, a division of Monster.com.
Mr. Weems graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law, where he anchored two mock trial teams representing New Mexico in the National Trial Competition. Membership in this team allowed Mr. Weems to participate in over 100 simulated criminal and civil trials. Mr. Weems received the Justice Lewis Powell Medallion for Excellence in Trial Advocacy and the Erwin Stern Moise Award in Legal and Judicial Ethics.
Following law school, Mr. Weems worked in a prominent insurance defense firm practicing in the defense against worker’s compensation and personal injury claims. He serves as an adjunct professor and lecturer in civil procedure at the University of New Mexico School of Law and coaches the University of New Mexico Law School's Mock Trial teams.
